1.Organization Overview
The Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) is one of Greece’s premier research centers, internationally recognized for its excellence and societal impact. Within FORTH, the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) hosts the Computational BioMedicine Laboratory (CBML), which specializes in advanced research in medical informatics, biomedical data integration, and decision support systems. While its primary focus lies in healthcare, CBML’s mission also embraces broader societal challenges through the development of technologies that translate fundamental science into real-world impact. Through a unified, computationally and mathematically grounded approach, CBML-FORTH transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries—bridging the physical, biological, social sciences, engineering, and medicine—to deliver impactful, future-facing research.
CBML-FORTH is driven by a commitment to scientific rigor, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, guided by a deep sense of social responsibility. The lab emphasizes human-centric technological solutions that promote health, well-being, equity, and informed decision-making in complex environments. Core values such as transparency, trust, inclusivity, and personal growth underpin its mission to advance human potential and improve lives.
2. Role in the GenAI4ED Project
CBML-FORTH leads several key tasks across Work Package 3 (WP3) and Work Package 4 (WP4) and actively contributes to both. WP3/WP4 aim to design and implement the GenAI4ED platform as a central, intelligent guidance hub for exploring, evaluating, and selecting suitable GenAI tools for education. The platform will enhance user interaction, support peer collaboration, and provide personalized, data-driven recommendations to empower both educators and students. CBML-FORTH plays a central role in shaping the AI-driven interaction, feedback, and recommendation infrastructure of the GenAI4ED platform, while also leading the integration of tools into the system’s automated workflows.
CBML-FORTH contributes to the design and implementation of the GenAI4ED platform through its leadership in key tasks across WP3 and WP4. These include the development of a real-time dialogue interface for user guidance and peer interaction (T3.1), a public feedback and rating system to evaluate external GenAI tools (T3.2), and a personalized recommendation engine grounded in criteria aligned with user profiles and educational contexts (T3.4). Additionally, CBML-FORTH leads the integration of GenAI tools and workflow automation (T4.4), ensuring technical compatibility, pedagogical relevance, and seamless user interaction through orchestrated pipelines and continuous feedback loops.
T3.1 Real-time Dialogue Interface: Design and implementation of an AI-powered chat assistant for user guidance, along with a community discussion space where users can ask questions, share experiences, and exchange insights on GenAI tools in educational contexts.
T3.2 Public Feedback and Rating System: Devolvement of a structured feedback mechanism allowing users to evaluate external GenAI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Khan Academy, MATHia, Brainly) featured on the platform. The system captures user reviews, ratings, and suggestions, helping others make informed choices while continuously improving tool evaluations.
T3.4 Evaluation and Recommendation Engine: Creation of a personalized recommendation engine and a criteria definition module that maps user profiles and educational context to suitable GenAI tools.
T4.4 GenAI Tools Integration and Workflow Automation: The goal is to offer seamless interaction for educators and students exploring GenAI tools, ensuring both technical compatibility and pedagogical relevance. This includes developing orchestration pipelines for automating integration workflows and conducting interoperability testing. The process is informed by user needs (from T1.3) and continuous feedback (from T3.2), supporting ongoing refinement and improved usability across diverse educational contexts.
3. Contributions and Achievements
CBML-FORTH is responsible for some of the project’s most critical technological deliverables, including the intelligent interface for platform interaction, the criteria-based recommendation engine, and the integration pipeline for the featured GenAI tools. These components will enable teachers and students to navigate the evolving GenAI ecosystem with greater confidence, personalization, and effectiveness.
Drawing on its deep expertise in decision support, data integration, and human-centered design, CBML-FORTH brings advanced orchestration, analytics, and dialogue technologies to the educational domain. Its solutions are not only technically robust but also dynamically responsive to user feedback, ensuring continual alignment with evolving pedagogical needs and societal priorities.
